12 Week Update

So how's this for my first bumpdate? Not one, but TWO bad selfies! I thought I'd start doing these things once I started showing for real but I figured 12 weeks is a good enough starting point. I need to have at least one recollection of my first trimester! Here we go:

1) Weeks Pregnant/Size of baby? 12 weeks! I think saying 3 months sounds slightly more impressive though :) I have a few different apps on my phone that constantly tell me the babies size in comparison to different fruits. They never match up though, It drives me crazy. So... the baby is either the size of a large plum or a lime.

2) Symptoms? I have been so incredibly blessed with this pregnancy. I only had very light nausea from about week 6 to week 7. I just had to have some crackers before I got out of bed in the morning and I was good to go. Ginger-ale helped too. I only threw up once (during week 7 I believe) and I believe it was more of a tender mercy than anything. My nausea started to fade and I was getting worried. I said a prayer that night to help me feel at peace and the next morning is when I threw up. That comfort held me over until we were able to go to our first ultrasound. Besides that one week, the only symptom I've had is extreme sleepiness. For awhile there, 8:00pm was my bedtime. I could also attribute that to going to school full time and working though. Saturdays are basically my only free day and that's usually spent catching up on laundry/dishes/hw with Richard. Don't feel too bad though, we always make dates a priority. I am however looking forward to that magic 2nd trimester burst of energy that everyone talks about because I miss my old busy-body self.

3) Sleep? Just a few days ago I've noticed myself waking up with slight back-aches. Getting comfortable at night is starting to get more difficult. Last night I discovered that it helps if I keep a pillow between my legs and propped up behind my back. I might take some of my birthday money and splurge on one of those pregnancy pillows that take up the whole bed, poor Richard :( Has anyone gotten one they loved? Or have you gotten one and had it not be worth it? I'm all ears. I also have to make one bathroom trip in the middle of the night but it's usually easy for me to fall right back asleep.

4) Mood? I just asked Richard for an honest answer to this question and he said, "Well this week you've been pleasant" HAHA! I've definitely had my moments. I would best describe myself as being just super melodramatic. One time at about 8 weeks I remember myself being just super crazy and literally putting myself to bed at like 7:30pm because I knew I was being ridiculous. Essentially putting myself in time-out. It's kind of like an out of body experience, I know I'm doing it but I can't really do much about it. I feel like Ron Burgundy when he says, "I'm in a glass case of EMOOOTTTIOOON" lol. Please do yourself a favor and youtube that clip.

Oh and while you're there, this is the first commercial that made me cry. Like, not just one tear, but crying for probably a solid 5 minutes. I showed it to two of my co-workers today to see if it was actually sad or just my hormones and they said, "yep, just hormones." haha

5) Fitness? Before I got pregnant, I was going to the gym 4-5 days a week for about an hour at a time. I kept that up until about week 6 and went down to about 3-4 days a week for an hour. For the last two weeks I've only gone like 2 days a week if I'm lucky and I'll do lunges and some arm workouts with 5lb weights if I watch TV. Maybe some calf raises as I straighten my hair haha. I'm trying to be better though! Gotta just force myself out of bed in the morning. I've read that it's better for pregnant women to have more frequent (but lighter) exercise than heavier exercise a few times a week. My ideal goal is to go to the gym 2-3 times a week and then go on a 30 minute power walk on my off days. I think it will help once the Fresno weather cools down.

6) Cravings? I have been craving red meat and potatoes! Steak, burgers, tacos, chilli, baked or mashed potatoes and fries. Sooooo bad I know. HOWEVER I am NOT craving sweets or chocolate which is some sort of miracle. I don't really understand how this baby is mine if it doesn't like chocolate. Some days are better than others but I can say that I've actually been really good about my healthy eating habits. I make sure to get fruits and veggies in everyday for my little nugget.

7) Maternity clothes? I haven't gained any weight yet so my clothes are all fitting the same. You can see in the above pictures that there hasn't really been much progress in the bump category. Although, those pictures aren't the best comparison since I'm wearing different clothes and have a totally different stance but that's okay. I've noticed that I don't like the feeling of clothes around my stomach. Even if something isn't tight, it just bugs me to have it sitting on my waist. The only thing I might go buy soon is another bra. My sister also gave me some cute hand-me-down maternity clothes and a belly band so I'm ready to go for when the time comes!

8) Movement? Nothing yet! Can't wait for that to happen though.

9) Highlight/lowlight this week? I'm going to give highlights and lowlights for the last 12 weeks to wrap things up. Lowlights first. I am such a pansy when it comes to needles. After I had my blood drawn the first time, I had to sit outside in the waiting room for 5 minutes to keep myself from fainting. Once I felt good enough to walk to my car, I sat in there for probably another 15 minutes before I felt comfortable enough to drive. SUCH A SISSY I KNOW. The second time around, the Dr. suggested I lay down and that made all the difference. So I'm hoping I'll be in a better place in that regard now because I know there will only be more needles to come.

Some highlights have been of course finding out I'm pregnant after wanting it for so long, telling all of our family and friends, and getting our first ultrasound. I didn't really know what to expect emotionally from myself when we went but it was
definitely different that I imagined. It was shorter than expected (I could have sat there all day watching my baby!) but still very magical. Hearing and seeing the heartbeat was really fun. The weeks leading up to the ultrasound, Richard didn't seem too excited about it but he was adorable when it was actually happening. He spotted the heartbeat before the ultrasound tech and was smiling super big at the screen. I now have such an emotional attachment to that picture. We have it framed in our apartment and on both of our phones to look at. I know I'm biased but it's just the cutest little bean I've ever seen!!

10) Looking forward to? Our next ultrasound is on the 25th! I am so excited to see how our little bean has progressed. I'm crossing my fingers to be able to see it move around a bit. I hear the end of first trimester ultrasound is a bit more in-depth so hopefully it will last longer than 5 minutes. I might slip a $20 to the tech to give me another 5 mins :) We love our baby so much and are so grateful for the opportunity to be parents in just a few more months!

  1. I am soooo excited for you. So for the pregnancy pillow I bought a pregnancy pillow and didn't like it. You may like it, I just didn't. We ended up taking it back and I bought a body pillow. Just one of those long ones. I felt with the pregnancy pillows it was hard to move at night and towards end of my second and third trimester. Get what feels good to you thought. Pregnancy gets really uncomfortable towards the end of it.
